Biography
Andriy was born and learnt a famous folk tradition, a la prima painting of ornaments and symbolic images with tiny brushes made of kitten’s fur, in the village of Petrykivka in central Ukraine. In post-communist time, he became the best living carrier of the centuries-old skills, almost completely eradicated and marginalized during Soviet times.
A unique cultural marvel within the arts and crafts evolution, Petrykivka painting originating from about the 18th century in southeastern Ukraine. For over 200 years, the villagers of Petrykivka have decorated their homes, architectural details, personal household belongings and musical instruments with a vibrant method of ornamental painting. Andriy Pikush’s mission in life became reviving the authentic tradition and connecting contemporary masters to the style’s historic lineage. In 2012, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine decreed Petrykivka painting a national cultural asset under the protection of Ukrainian government. For his creative input and dedication to the folk tradition, Andriy Pikush was awarded a title of the People’s Artist of Ukraine. His works have been exhibited around the globe and represented Ukrainian art during international trade and art shows in many countries around the world. At present, Andriy Pikush serves as a Chairman of the Dnipropetrovsk Branch of Ukrainian National Artists’ Union.
